Erdstern *PIC*

Richard

Growing in a park in grass under cedar. In all ~3cm in diameter. The endoperidium is 1.1cm wide, with a warty surface. It has a short stalk (~1mm, not visible in photos). The arms of the exoperidium are hygroscopic (they later curled up around the endoperidium). Earth sticks to the bottom of the exoperidium and in the second photo a hairiness can be seen at the bottom of the edges of the exoperidium arms; I think this shows that there is a "mycelial layer" which I have seen mentioned. The spores are spherical and knobbly (~6-7µ).

Hi Richard,

That should be Geastrum ambiguum. The sitting endoperidium, the rough surface and the hygrometric is typical for this species.

This type fail me in my collection.

Best regards Peter

Hi Peter.
Thanks for your identification. I don't wish to hijack this thread for the English language - I can understand German, and even write it after a fashion. Still, it's easier to answer in English.

Geastrum ambiguum is not in Index Fungorum and I did not find much on the web about it. I did find a Mushroom Observer article at http://mushroomobserver.org/name/show_name/17747 which said it is a synonym of G. campestre; is that right? It does have a stalk, but only 1mm high. Do you have G. campestre in your collection of familiar fungi?

Best Regards,
Richard

Addendum

Peter W., (vor 5844 Tagen) @ Peter W.

The endoperidium is very short stalked by Dörfelt. G. ambiguum var.ambiguum.

Geastrum campestre = G. pedicellatum (Dörfelt)

Hi Richard,
This fungus is present in the index fungorum.
http://www.indexfungorum.org/Names/NamesRecord.asp?RecordID=146605
I made the provision for the key of Dörfelt. (Die Erdsterne)
G. campestre is a kind of stalked.
This species is very rare and there is not much literature.
Peter

Hi Peter,

Ah, sorry, I see now that it is in Index Fungorum, but it is not in Species Fungorum, and it is only on the site as an old name; it does not say that it is a current species.

Out of ambiguum or campestre, which species is rare?

Could you say why you don't think it is campestre? I didn't quite understand. Mine has a stalk (though very short).

Regards,
Richard

Hi.

Sorry, I missed your addendum. Could you just say why it is not G. pedicellatum in Dörfelt? It has a stalk of 1mm. Thanks for your attention.

Best Regards,
Richard

Hi Richard,

I have made that mistake already. Here you fndet but a bibliography.

The stem of G. pedicellatum is longer (by Dörfelt). Both species are rare, but G. ambiguum probably still less so. Both are part way into an affinity group. Perhaps both are the same? The best way would be to send something Mr Dörfelt.

Best regards Peter

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your advice. I don't think my specimen is like G. pedicellum, but I am not sure why you think G. pedicellum = G. campestre. For instance mine looks quite like the one at http://www.floreoleron.fr/fiche_champi_v2.php3?nom_genre=geastrum&nom_espece=campestre or the one at http://www.google.fr/images?q=geastrum+campestre&hl=fr&client=firefox-a&rlz=1R1GGGL_fr_.... By the way, the best book I have on earthstars is Courtecuisse; I am just searching on the internet to find out about them.

Would Herr Dörfelt be interested if I contacted him? If so, how could I do so?

Regards,
Richard
